Children often need the care only a skilled medical team can provide. These teams can only be found in comprehensive children's hospitals. You'll find that the Blair E. Batson Hospital works hard to have a child-friendly approach to health care.
The staff makes it a place where "kids can be kids," even though they are sick. Whether they are in the hospital for a short time or an extended stay, they are given the chance to not only heal, but also to play, learn and grow.
Children's Hospital treats the whole child, not just the disease. Each floor, except the intensive care unit and surgical suite, has an activity room open daily and staffed by child life specialists. The Batson Hospital has its own school with fully-certified teachers to help patients maintain their grade level despite being away from their schools during the regular school year.
A Resource for Mississippi
The Blair E. Batson Hospital for Children averaged 9,000 admissions last year. More than 150,000 children from all of Mississippi's 82 counties were treated in its clinics and emergency room. Batson Hospital has treated thousands of children from the most routine illnesses such as a broken finger to ear tubes to cancers such as leukemia. We have helped bring survival rates for childhood cancers from less than 20 percent to better than 70 percent in the last 30 years.
Batson is special because our physicians and staff only see children. Everything is child-sized and kid-friendly. Nowhere else in Mississippi wll you find the wide range of pediatric treatment programs. We have the state's only children's emergency room, the only children's cancer program, the only comprehensive cystic fibrosis treatment program, the only epilepsy center, and the only congenital heart defect center.
Not only do we help our state's kids lead healthy, happy lives, we share our research with the international medical community. This research helps medical professionals treat kids all over the world.
Since Batson Hospital shares its research with the international medical community, one child saved at Batson means thousands more saved around the world.
